Biography
Lara Gabor (she/her) is a lighting and digital media designer and technician based in Naarm/Melbourne. Her upbringing in Singapore fostered a passion for multidisciplinary work which has flourished upon relocating back to Australia. In 2023, Lara completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Production at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). She is currently employed as a lighting technician at Arts Centre Melbourne, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company and Museums Victoria in addition to managing Lara Gabor Designs, her lighting and video design business.
Most notably, in 2025, Lara worked in collaboration with Museums Victoria and Additive Lighting as a lighting technician on ‘Our Wondrous Planet’, a permanent and immersive exhibition at Melbourne Museum.
Lara’s lighting design credits include; ‘Genius’ 2025 (Dir. Nicky Fearn) at Bulmba-Jaa Arts Centre in Cairns, Associate for ‘Resonance’ 2025 (Chor. James Batchelor, Original Design by Katie Sfetkidis) performed at The Substation and Canberra Theatre Centre as well as ‘Three-Phase’ 2025 (chor. Emily White) at The Meat Market.
Additionally Lara has worked as Projection Designer on ‘STORKED’ 2025 (Dir. Maude Davey), 'Elegies; A Song Cycle' 2024 (Dir. Tyran Parke) and 'I Hope this Means Something' 2024 (Dir. Benjamin Nichol) as well as the high-school editions of Mamma Mia and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus.
Lara completed professional lighting secondments on ‘Mary Poppins’ (Michael Cassel Group), ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ (Global Creatures), and ‘Mamma Mia!’ (Michael Coppel, Louise Withers & Linda Bewick) in 2023.
Lara hopes to continue her practice in Australia and beyond, sharing her enthusiasm for theatrical storytelling.
